International Day of Parliamentarism 2025

Today, on International Day of Parliamentarism 2025, we join the global call for more inclusive and equitable parliaments.
Despite global progress, women remain underrepresented in parliaments worldwide including Nigeria, where they hold less than 10% both at the National and State legislatures. This structural inequality weakens confidence in the fight for equal opportunities and trust in the political system.
At IRIAD, we recognize that a true parliament requires reforms such as Nigeria’s proposed Reserved Seats for Women Bill and cultural shifts that remove barriers to women’s full political participation. Nigeria’s parliament must reflect the diversity of its people to ensure policies that promote gender equity, protect rights, and foster sustainable development.
Let us make every step and every action count!

In light of the just celebrated International Day of Parliamentarism, we draw attention to one of our key research contributions to advancing open and inclusive governance, titled:
“Best Practices of Open Parliaments Around the World.”
This research paper explores Open Governments and Open Parliaments, the Open NASS Initiative in Nigeria, case studies from Mexico, Kenya, and Canada, as well as key lessons and recommendations for reforming Nigeria’s legislature.
