Did you know?

In the 2023 elections, only 48 out of 1,019 female candidates were elected, a dismal 4.7% success rate.

Nigeria ranks among the lowest globally in women’s representation, with less than 5% of seats in the National Assembly held by women. This means critical voices and perspectives are left out of national decision-making.

But there is hope on the horizon!

The Bill for Special Legislative Seats for Women (HB 1349) has been reintroduced to address this imbalance and promote gender-inclusive governance.

Here’s what the bill proposes:

74 Special Federal Seats: One additional seat for women in both the Senate and House of Representatives for each state and the FCT.

108 Special State Seats: Three reserved seats for women in the House of Assembly of each state.

This bold step aims to amend Nigeria’s Constitution, with the changes set to take effect after the current Assembly’s term, subject to review every 16 years.

It’s about empowering women to lead, legislate, and shape the nation, building a stronger, more representative democracy.
