Maputo Protocol At 22

We commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Maputo Protocol, a landmark treaty that has been instrumental in advancing women’s rights in Africa. The Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, adopted on July 11, 2003, in Maputo, Mozambique, as of June 2023 44 out of 55 African countries, including Nigeria had ratified the protocol. As we celebrate this milestone, we acknowledge the progress made towards promoting gender equity and women’s empowerment. However, despite these efforts, significant challenges persist, including gender-based violence, discrimination, and unequal access to opportunities.
Let us work together to create a society that values and empowers all its members.
