International Day of Democracy
For 18 years, the world has observed this day to remind us: democracy only works when it works for everyone.
This year, the United Nations reminds us: “When every voice counts, democracy delivers.” And the Inter-Parliamentary Union urges us: “Bring Human Rights into Focus.”
At IRIAD and The Electoral Hub, we believe democracy is not a concept. It is a daily lived experience. It is in the classroom where a girl learns she can lead. It is in the town hall where a young person is included in the decision for the community.
It is in elections that are free and fair, and in government that is responsive and accountable to the people.
27 years of Fourth Republic, we still have work to do. IRIAD calls for action to:
1. Include women in leadership
2. Bring youth into rooms where decisions are made
3. Defend the space for citizens to speak, protest, and organize safely
4. Insist on transparent elections and open data
5. Demand governance that listens, includes, responds quickly, and accounts fully
6. Prioritize policies that improve citizens welfare
A democracy that ignores human rights cannot deliver. A democracy that silences people cannot progress.
As we commemorate IDD today, let us recommit. Let us speak up. Let us participate. Let us demand for a democratic governance that is citizen-centric.
Because when every voice counts, democracy delivers.
