Today, IRIAD – The Electoral Hub and PWAN join the world in commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa – The Maputo Protocol.
The Maputo Protocol is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking instruments for ensuring and safeguarding women’s rights. It is a progressive measure toward improving the quality of life for women on the African continent by pushing for the jettisoning of harmful cultural practices, respect for crucial socio-political and economic rights of women, and ending all forms of violence against women.
The continent-wide ratification of the protocol by 44 countries including Nigeria signals a positive step for women’s rights and dignity. However, domestication has remained a challenge requiring action by member countries of the African Union and their respective governments.
We, therefore, implore governments across the continent, especially the Nigerian government, to take steps towards the domestication of the Protocol. Let us create an enabling environment for women to reach their full potential and contribute to sustainable development.
