African Women’s Day 2025

Today, as we mark African Women’s Day with the theme “Advancing Social and Economic Justice for African Women through Reparations”, we reflect on the persistent inequalities women face across Africa.
In Nigeria, women remain largely underrepresented in politics, holding 5% of elective positions. This marginalisation undermines inclusive governance and equitable development.
We strongly support the Special Seats Bill as a critical step toward ensuring fair representation, amplifying women’s voices, and addressing historic injustices.
We call on stakeholders to take decisive action because an equitable Africa is only possible when women have an equal seat at the table.

In commemoration of the African Women’s Day 2025, the Initiative for Research, Innovation, and Advocacy in Development (IRIAD) is highlighting Continental and Regional Legal Frameworks that safeguard and advance the rights of women across Africa.
From the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa to the African Youth Charter and the Maputo Protocol, these instruments reflect a growing continental consensus on the urgent need to dismantle systemic barriers and promote gender equity.
These frameworks are symbolic and powerful tools for advocacy, policy reform, and accountability. They serve as blueprints for African governments to protect women’s rights, ensure equal opportunity, and foster inclusive development.
By raising awareness of these Legal Frameworks, IRIAD aims to strengthen implementation, encourage civic participation, and contribute to building a future where every African woman can thrive.
